Discontinuation of CD Music Collection
The Manhattan Public Library strives to maintain collections that reflect our community’s needs, interests, and the ways people access information. After careful review of long-term trends, we will be retiring our physical music CD collection. This change affects music CDs only. Audiobooks on CD will remain available.
Why this change is being made
- Declining use: Circulation of music CDs has been low for several years.
- Changes in technology: Most new cars and many modern devices no longer include CD players, making the format increasingly difficult for patrons to use.
- Outdated collection: Due to decreased demand, the music CD collection has not been actively updated—no new adult music CDs have been added since at least 2018, and no new children’s music CDs since at least 2021.
- Alternative access: Patrons have access to a large and diverse digital music collection through hoopla, available at no cost with a library card.
Availability of Withdrawn CDs
Withdrawn music CDs will be offered for purchase at the Manhattan Library Association Book Sale from February 27–March 1, 2026, while supplies last. We are glad these items will have the opportunity to find new homes in the community.

When are the music CDs being removed?

Why is the library removing the music CDs?
After reviewing long-term trends, we found that music CDs have had very low circulation for many years. The format has become harder to use, since most new cars and devices no longer include CD players. No new adult CDs have been purchased since at least 2018, and no new children’s CDs since at least 2021.
Can I (or the public) buy the CDs now?
Withdrawn CDs will be available only at the Manhattan Library Association Book Sale from February 27–March 1, 2026, while supplies last. They will not be available for purchase before the sale.
Why didn’t the library keep updating the collection?
As circulation declined significantly, the library strategically reallocated resources to invest in other, more popular collections and formats that better serve our patrons’ current needs.
I still use CDs—why remove them?
We understand that some patrons still enjoy CDs. The decision reflects overall usage trends and technology changes. We hope the upcoming sale provides an opportunity for patrons to take home items they enjoy.
Where can patrons access music now?
Through hoopla, patrons can stream a large variety of albums, soundtracks, and playlists—free with a library card and accessible on most devices.

Are audiobook CDs being removed too?

What will happen with the space?

Who made the decision to retire the CD collection?
With the support of our library’s Director, the decision was made through the library’s standard collection review process. This includes consideration of circulation data, relevance, technological changes, and community needs.
